Tropic Thunder: Are teens just now finding out Robert Downey Jr. wore blackface in ‘Tropic Thunder’?

Every so often the fact that Robert Downey Jr. wore blackface in the movie Tropic Thunder pops up.

In the movie, released in 2008, Downey plays a white Australian actor named Kirk Lazarus, who is overly committed to his roles. Lazarus even undergoes a skin pigmentation procedure to change his skin color and enable him to play a Black man—*enter blackface—named Staff Sgt. Lincoln Osiris.

In Hollywood, Downey’s blackface performance won him an Oscar for the controversial role. Yet, the Avenger’s star agrees that his role may not have gone over so smoothly with audiences today.

His assessment is not wrong.

One Twitter user pointed out that some are just now stumbling on the award-winning film for the very first time.

“Woke teenagers discovering Tropic Thunder is my favorite tweet genre,” they wrote, along with a series of tweets from users outraged over the film.

After the tweet went viral, others expressed dismay over Downey wearing blackface.

“Remember that time Robert Downey jr did full blackface and nobody said ANYTHING,” one user tweeted.

If Gen Z truly was outraged en masse, their tweets were quickly drowned out by grown Twitter.

“If you’re not seeing the Robert Downey Jr. blackface outrage tweets from people who’ve never seen Tropic Thunder, you’re in for a treat,” one user joked.

They also tried school those who they believe may not have even watched the movie.

“‘Remember that time Robert Downey jr did full blackface to shine a light on the ridiculous practice of it for a comedy movie? What a great actor and film.’ There, fixed it,” one user wrote in response to a critical tweet that has since been deleted.

Must byline Dexter Hastings/ bbcolumn.com Matt Sen v Taha Mishosseini Sen came out strong and looked good as Mishosseini covered up well, halfway through the first round Mishosseini caught Sen with a right hook flush on the temple putting the unbeaten fighter down.

Sen got to his feet and was allowed to continue, Mishosseini poured on the pressure with big shots, Sen had not really recovered from the knock down, Sen’s corner then threw the towel in and the ref stopped the fight one minute 25 seconds I to the first round.

Fight Preview

The countdown is over. The raw action and rough and tumble of Ultimate Boxxer IV – a riotous, three-round tournament of tossed leather – is upon us.

When the dust has settled at Altrincham Ice Arena, Manchester, tomorrow night, one of eight cruiserweights will receive the lion’s share of a £50,000 cashpot and the coveted Golden Robe – a glittering gown bestowed on the victor.

There’s plenty of local interest in the quickfire, thrills-and-spills competition, televised live by BT Sport. The format has proved wildly popular with fans who have only a passing interest in the game, those not wooed by skill and technique. It provides the Tysonesque drama and knockdowns they crave.

Both former Oldbury bodybuilder Matt Sen, with only one loss in six, and Wolverhampton-raised, Stafford-based Antony Woolery are in the mix.

Neither are expected to don the dazzling robe and Woolery, who has had only two fights (one loss), is probably the night’s rank outsider. The draw has not be kind to them, to boot.

Sen will fight Preston prospect Damian Chambers, unbeaten in seven – four of those victories coming by way of stoppage.

Woolery, a former semi-professional footballer, has even more reason to curse his luck. He faces Londoner Mikael Lawal, the bookies’ favourite and my pick to win the competition.

Head to Head

The heavy-handed Nigerian, now living in Shepherd’s Bush, is on a nine-fight winning run, with only three opponents lasting the distance.

For East Midlands fans, add to the mix Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Rhasian Earlington. The 21-year-old, unbeaten in five, is also recipient of a tough draw.

He faces Romford’s former Commonwealth champ Tony Conquest (18-3) in a match that is more intriguing than the stats suggest. Conquest was KO’d last time out by Italian prospect Fabio Turchi in Florence.

Regardless of the calibre of opposition, if you start fast and keep busy, you’ve got a chance.

Woolery, who runs a successful bathroom and kitchen business, has adopted an admirable “nothing to lose” attitude.

He told Ringside: “When the draw was made, I thought I was unlucky. Now I think I want to fight the best first, while I’m still fresh. The training and sparring have gone so well, the nerves have given way to excitement.

European glory is on the line for two English clubs on Saturday as the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano hosts the Champions League final. Liverpool takes on Tottenham in an all-Premier League affair, with the European crown guaranteed to go back to England in either London or Liverpool.

The Reds, under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp, are aiming to take home their sixth Champions League crown in club history. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham is on a wild ride like the club has never experienced before, playing in the final for the first time in club history.

Storylines

Liverpool: The Reds have Roberto Firmino back healthy for this one but it remains to be seen if he starts, according to Jurgen Klopp on Friday. As for Naby Keita, he’s out, as expected.

Liverpool is near full strength and has a ton of momentum after that comeback against Barcelona. After losing the final last year against Real Madrid, the Reds can redeem themselves here in the biggest of ways.

The Reds have beaten Tottenham twice this season by the same 2-1 score line. This Reds team looked set to win the Premier League and fall out of the Champions League, but now it’s quite the opposite.

Finishing second in the league to Manchester City puts the pressure on the Reds even more so here. It’s Year 4 of the Klopp experience, and after a handful of final losses. This could be the moment that changes his career and that of his players.

Tottenham: All eyes are on Harry Kane. Will he start, will he play? Spurs made it through the quarterfinals and semifinals without him, and now it’s all about Mauricio Pochettino deciding if he should reinsert him into the lineup and perhaps impact the team dynamic.

There’s also the chance to bring him off the bench if things aren’t working early on. It’s a tricky situation, but it’s better to have him than to not.

Tottenham knows how valuable he is to this team. But is the recent form good enough to justify keeping him on the bench? He has been training, he appears fit to play. Only time will tell.
