Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground makes its debut on UFC Fight Pass Sunday, with a star-studded lineup of MMA notables scheduled to compete.
And because you know there’s bound to be something a little crazy on the card if Sonnen is involved, the event will feature some tag-team grappling, as well.
Submission Underground 8 takes place Sunday at Roseland Theater in Portland, Ore. The submission-only grappling card streams in its entirety on UFC Fight Pass at 6 p.m. ET.
In the night’s main event, undefeated Bellator welterweight contender Austin Vanderford takes on former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields.
Additional featured contests include UFC veterans Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez in a rematch of their 2012 UFC “Fight of the Night,” multiple-time grappling world champion and Gracie Barra Portland coach Fabiano Scherner vs. former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, MMA pioneer Dennis Hallman vs. Australian grappling sensation Craig Jones and big-show veteran Pat Healy against former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
Eight two-person teams will also hit the mats for the night’s tag-team grappling competitions, including affiliate representatives from 10th Planet, Brazilian Top Team, Straight Blast Gym and more.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) legends Jon Jones and Dan Henderson, four years after they were booked to fight at the ill-fated UFC 151, will settle the score on the mat this afternoon (Sun., Dec. 11, 2016) in the main event of Submission Underground (SUG) 2.
You can catch the whole card live on FloGrappling.com (assuming you have a subscription) at 5:30 p.m. ET (more viewing details here).
UFC’s presence isn’t limited to the main event, however. Former women’s Bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will take on Jessica Eye in the co-feature, while well-traveled mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Jeff Monson faces Warren Brooks, head of UFC Gym’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu program.
FIRST SUDDEN VICTORY: Tate goes first, starting on the back, and immediately works for the choke. Her control is solid so far, Eye doing little to escape. She eventually gets out at 2:06 and starts on Tate’s back. Tate rolls into guard and Eye tries an arm triangle from her back. Tate slips out at 0:40.
SECOND: Eye escapes in 0:09 for a combined total of 2:15. She elects to start in armbar position. Tate gets her arm free in 0:07 for a combined time of 0:47
THIRD:Tate starts in armbar position. Eye gets out in 0:10 for a combined 2:25. Eye starts on the back and quickly transitions to an armbar. Tate escapes in 0:15 for a combined 1:02
Final result: Tate def. Eye by fastest escape

Warren Brooks vs. Jeff Monson
Slow start, both men working from the single collar tie. More low engagements. Ninety seconds in, still no real action. Brooks pulls guard two minutes in and locks up half guard. Monson not doing terribly much from top position. Halfway in. Still half guard. Now Monson takes half guard and Brooks goes to his knees. Moonson inserts one hook, then another. “The Snowman” looking for the choke. One minute to go, Brooks still hand fighting. Both men have turned a fascinating shade of purple. Brooks rolls into top position with around fifteen seconds to go, can’t do anything there. Time for sudden victory.
